Penchant for Pendants

This post is going to be short and somewhat jumbled, because my brain is jumbled. (That happens to other people, too, right?)

———

Recently I’ve been working on breaking Robert of his love of ceiling fans. Mostly because I am a mean wife who is always cold and the man has a penchant for running ceiling fans in winter (and not in the running-in-reverse-to-force-heated-air-downward sort of way). But also because ceiling fans are ugly.

In the master bedroom we replaced the fan with a light from ReStore. It was a pretty cheap fix at about $35. The brassy light itself was about $5, the lighting kit used to rewire it was also $5 at ReStore, the clear globe ($14) came from Home Depot, the Edison bulb was $8 at Lowe’s,  and the Antique Gold Rub ‘n Buff I used was about $3.

You might remember that we also got rid of the low-hanging ceiling fan in the living room a while back. (And our tall friends rejoiced at the idea of not being decapitated just walking through the room.) We bought a table fan for the sofa table in the living room, and plan to add one in the master before summer.

This photo also shows three of the next projects we’d like to tackle in the master: the nightstands, the ceiling paint job, and the AC vents. When will we actually get to those? Who knows.

In the art room we swapped the fan out for the light that used to be over my parents’ kitchen sink. The fact that we used an Edison bulb here, too, means the rest of the room will need a bit of work as far as task lighting. Yay snowballing.

In other art room news, I picked this metal basket up on eBay with plans to use it on the shelf over the flat files. It’s pretty heavy with the books, and the shelves may already be bowing (or my eyes are playing tricks on me), so I’m thinking it will live on top of the flat files instead. But again, since things like to snowball around here, the top of the flat files themselves is definitely bowing, so we also need to make a wooden topper for those.

What have y’all been up to lately? Any lighting projects, or has anyone else been experiencing the snowball effect that tends to happen with DIY projects?

    Down with ceiling fans!

  2. I want to hate ceiling fans now. But then spring will come and the house will be stuffy. Darn Iowa’s changing seasons.

    Your lights are looking great!

      Thanks, Michelle!

I know what you mean! It’s pretty much always stuffy and humid in Florida, but there are only about 5-6 ceiling fans that I like, all of which are out of our price range. Fortunately table fans seem to do just as good a job moving air.

  3. Love the new pendants &how they look in the spaces.

I really hate ceiling fans & cannot wait to get rid of ours, but I know my husband will wail and moan and protest about how hot it will be in the summer without it. Uphill battle that one.

      Thanks, Martina!

That’s part of why we started with the living room fan instead of the bedroom. I was pretty sure it was a lost cause and I was going to have to find a ceiling fan I didn’t hate. Finally, after trying the table fan in the bedroom Robert agreed! :)

  4. i usually feel like ceiling fans shrink a room.

    like the bin!

Thanks for the comment, Kelly! :)

I usually feel the same way about fans, especially with the 8 foot ceilings in our house.

Glad you like the bin! Between the that and my new boots, I buy myself the best birthday presents! ;)

  5. That metal bin is awesome!!! I’m loving metal stuff lately :)

Cait, that new light in the art room and the metal bin are fantastic! That said, how’s the new light in the master bedroom working out? It looks a bit like an outdoor light to me, but only because the bottom glass globe is clear instead of frosted – is that light ever too bright if you happen to be lying in bed with the lights on?

    • Cait says:

      Thanks, Annie!

The light in the master actually came with a frosted globe when I bought it from ReStore, but I replaced it with a clear globe, since I knew we wanted to use an Edison bulb. The bulb is only 60w, so it’s not too bright or jarring at night/first thing in the morning (but there is also plenty of light with the nightstand lights). Basically it’s working out fine. :)

  7. I’m pretty sure everything I do to our house has a snowball effect! There’s always something, but that’s what makes it fun and things never get boring! I just got new pillows for our living room and I’m feeling good about the room, but I know something else will come up soon as a result of that! haha!

Thanks so much for the comment, Amy! I’m glad we aren’t the only ones dealing with the snowball effect!
